Yarn Project Challenge

Spin a Good Yarn is a fiber arts group that meets at the library twice a month. We discuss books and current events while working on our current projects. We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday evening at 7pm.  In the fall I handed out a challenge to the group. Here is a PDF with instructions for challenge.

The challenge is creating something that has been inspired by binary code (ex. 01001011 is the code for the letter k).  Use this binary code as inspiration for a pattern of your name or favorite saying. Be creative 0 and 1 could be knit and pearl, color changes, single crochet and double crochet, or maybe even a drop stitch. Have fun!

Project show-and -tell was at our first meeting in 2015.

 Not everyone participated in the challenge, but everyone brought finished projects. So here is a discrption of each project (starting on the left);
  • Jamie: Knitted a hat. (She usually crochets, and is learning to knit. This is one of her first projects)
  • Nikki: Crocheted afghan.
  • Stefanie: Knitted scarf. Stripes are binary code for the message "Don't forget to drink your oveltine."
  • Sharon: Knitted sweater
  • Jan: Knitted socks with binary code message "When life gives you scraps make a quilt"
  • Maylin: Crocheted baby afghan (She is just learning to crochet and this is her 2nd project)
  • Becky: Crocheted afghan (king size) with binary code message the names of her family members. (each square is a letter)
  • Other projects not pictured:
  • Audra: crocheted child's poncho sweater
  • Laura: knitted cardigan.
  • Merna: knitted socks

Read Your Way Around the World

This display contains items that are about or take place anywhere but the USA.

Close up of side. I took maps from old National Geographic magazines and cut them into squares along with some clip art books and scattered them randomly.

My favorite part is the globe that sits on top of the display. I cut out and stuck little books all over the world to represent where the books take place or are about.

Reading is SNOW Cool!

Our summer reading program has always been very successful and I was often asked why we didn't do a program in the winter. So a few years ago our library started a winter reading program that runs January through the first day of spring in March. This year the theme is Reading is SNOW Cool!
This is our bulletin board promoting the program.
Registration on a table near the Circulation Desk.
The program is broken down into 3 age groups.
  • Non-readers ages 0-5 get to earn their prize by being read to.
  • Readers ages 5-12 earn their prize by how many minutes they read.
  • Teens and adults have a BINGO card that encourages them to read different types of books.

December Holidays (Christmas Tree)

In December I wanted to do a display that would include all the December holidays. I thought a Christmas tree would be the best for this. This tree is made out of green paper and then the balls are scratch paper and magazine pages. Olaf the Snowman was a craft project that the youth department made.

We had books, movies, and music for all ages about Christmas (featuring both Santa and Christ's birth), Hanukkah, and Kwanza.

Making the tree was simply made by cutting strips of paper like this. Then forming the triangle tree shape. Then I ruffled the "branches" and added circles cut from old magazine pages.
This is the poster that I used. I can't remember where I found the book and bookmark. I have used this image for a few years for other library things. I just added the Santa hats to make it festive.

Bookish Necklace

For Christmas my co-worker made this necklace for me out of pages from an old book. I love it! She has been holding a craft night once a week and many of those projects have been items made out of old and damaged books. I hope to post a few more of those projects later.

Santa's reading list

I made this Santa a few years ago. The list he is holding has book titles on it. I've used different titles on the board to go with him, but this years is my favorite "Making a list and reading it twice."
