Banned Books Week (part 2)

The book display has been up for the month, but now that it is officially banned books week I have added a little challenge to the display. Can you guess the book in the jar? This year I only did 3 books. See last year's contest here.
Fun contest that patrons can enter. Winner will win a library book bag.

Challenge was place right next to the book display.
First I took 3 books that are on the banned/challenged books lists and randomly copied 6-8 pages front and back. I then took these copies and cut them up. (individually so I could keep the books separate). I then gathered the pieces and stuffed them into a jar.  Can you name the books in the jars?

Banned Books Week

All graphics used this year came from the ALA website (link). I loved their "Words Have Power" theme. I added the "Break Free...READ" to make our display different from other libraries.
Only graphic I altered by adding a broken chain to symbolized breaking free. The fortune teller has several banned book stats and info is also from the ALA site.

We pulled several books from all over the library to place on display.

Banned Books

It's that time of year again to celebrate our right to read during BANNED BOOKS WEEK
This year we made a prison. The bars are made from twisted up streamers.

Side of the display has an explanation about what a banned or challenged book is. Info taken from the ALA website. The cute graphic is taken from here. And the stats on most banned books is an image from The Huffington Post/ ALA.

Sign used on the top is from ALA 2013 materials. I also added a guide book to the open bottom shelf
so that patrons & staff can look up when/where/why on the challenged books.

Banned Books Week 2014

Celebrating our Freedom to Read anything we choose!

View as you enter the library. Poster is from ALA.
This was a fun display to put together. I used caution tape, a poster from ALA, and a cute graphic I found on Google (shown below graphic found here) .

Poster made for the top of the display shelves.

On one side of the display I posted a list of the top 100 banned books from 2000-2009. Lists found here. I also posted this explanation that is from an article I wrote for our newsletter.
What is banned books week?
Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. This year it is held September 21-27, it highlights the value of free and open access to information.
We would like to celebrate the freedom to read by displaying several books that have been challenged across the nation. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group.  Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. As such, they are a threat to freedom of speech and choice.
And, YES, these books do check out. Celebrate your freedom to read and check one out today.
